Only seven pairs of skis, available exclusively through ASPENX, showcase the artwork of world-renowned mixed-medium contemporary American artist Rashid Johnson. The Chicago-born, New York City-based artist is known for his influential work that takes on a range of various media to explore themes of art history, individual and shared cultural identities, personal narratives, literature, philosophy, materiality, and critical history. As part of Aspen Snowmass’ Art in Unexpected Places program, the Rashid Johnson Limited Edition Skis exhibit Johnson’s 2019 piece, Escape Collage, created from ceramic tile, mirror tile, vinyl, spray enamel, oil stick, black soap, and wax.
Design, engineered and manufactured in Colorado by locally owned Folsom Custom Skis, the Rashid Johnson Limited Edition Skis share specifications with the company’s best-selling model—the SPAR 88. Prototyped on Aspen Mountain, this carving tool with all-mountain capabilities combines precision, power and progression. The skis feature directional rocker to perform on all terrain – from chopped up powder on Jackpot to perfect corduroy on Spar to moguls under Lift 1A—and a shorter turn radius makes the ski uber responsive. A poplar, maple and bamboo core remains quiet and stable at speed on firmer snow and “90 / 10 glass carbon” composite structure maintains stiffness and decreases weight. The base includes an Aspen Snowmass' signature die punch.
